The skin, our largest organ, is directly exposed to the sun’s rays so in that case we synthesize a certain amount of vitamin D. The modern lifestyle, sun protection clothes and the application of protective filters are the main reasons for the decreasing natural intake of the mentioned vitamin D.
The use of vitamin D is a common choice in many cases, especially when it comes to children, athletes or people with chronic diseases. Its main function is to stimulate the immune system if it is too weak, while on the other hand it alleviates the activity of immune cells when the system acts too strongly.
Vitamin D contains immunomodulatory characteristics, so it has a very specific effect on the immune system. The action is especially emphasized in the presence of cold viruses. Vitamin D prevents the formation and excessive accumulation of cytokines and chemokines in the lungs, which is very often the cause of major complications related to colds.
Studies recently conducted and published in the Journal of Infection and Public Health have shown that vitamin D3 supplementation has protective properties against respiratory infections. It is suggested to consume 25-50 µg per day without pronounced side effects.
According to the guidelines for the use of vitamin D, the recommended concentration of vitamin D in the blood in the population should be 75 nmol/L – 125 nmol/L for optimal protection against infectious diseases. For adults who are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, preventive doses of vitamin D ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 IJ of vitamin D (400 IJ = 10 µg) are recommended. The recommended daily dose at the level of the EU is 5 µg per day, which is 100% of the recommended daily intake (%RDA). For proven vitamin D deficiency in adults, general practitioners and dieticians prescribe initial high doses of vitamin D, followed by maintenance with 1,500-2,000 IU.
