Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland. It is often called as a night hormone because it is intensely excreted in the darkness. By reducing the light our pineal gland reacts with increased production of melatonin whose role is to bring our body into sleep. Exposure to a strong light at night or low light during the day, may disrupt the synthesis of melatonin. To some people, especially older people, melatonin production may be reduced, causing a person to hard fall asleep, wake up often and spend too much time falling asleep. By raising melatonin levels in the body at an appropriate dose of 1mg before going to sleep, we can contribute to reduce the amount of time needed for falling asleep.
Melatonin can help when you travel between several time zones or if the rhythm of sleep and wake is disturbed shift work.
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that can not be synthesized in the body, so it must be acquired by diet or dietary supplements. In metabolism, it participates in protein formation, but also as a precursor to serotonin and melatonin, important neurotransmitters.
After absorbing L-tryptophan from food or food suplements, our bodies convert it to 5-HTP (5-hyrdoxytryptophan) and then to serotonin. Serotonin has a soothing and relaxing effect. It also has a role in regulating sleep because serotonin is precursor of melatonin, a key hormone for the sleep cycle.
